India

India has one of the largest economies on the planet and a population of 1.2 billion. Main industries include textiles, software, chemicals, food processing, steel, transportation equipment, cement, mining, petroleum, machinery, pharmaceuticals.

The Indian economy has been slowing throughout 2013 (from 5.1% in 2012 to 4.8% in 2013) with growth projected to reach 5.3% in 2014, according to the UN. Growth has been slowing due to weak private consumption  and sluggish investment. It is expected that growth will emerge in 2014 as investment increases and exports grow as the global economy picks up.

Inflation is currently running at 9% and is an issue the central bank is trying to contain by holding interest rates. The chief economist of the Indian central bank recently highlighted other issues of concern to the economy such as poor governance and inadequate infrastructure along with a weak currency and  a drop in foreign investment.

The economy has been hampered by a slowdown in mining and manufacturing but these areas should see growth in 2014 as the global economy improves. India's economic growth has been largely led by it's strong labour force which is in international demand in the fields of technology and engineering. Post independence India invested heavily in higher education which is now paying good dividends. However, basic education needs have not been addressed creating huge disparity in Indian society. 50% of the workforce still works in agriculture while this industry accounts for only 14% of GDP and education is a means of addressing this disparity.

Sustained growth in India is dependent on addressing the inflation issue, developing regional centres with affordable housing and boosting manufacturing which today only accounts for 15% of GDP.
