A central European country, Slovakia became independent when Czechoslovakia split peacefully in January 1993. It joined the EU in 2004, the Schengen area in 2007 and the Eurozone in 2009.

Having experienced very high economic growth from 2001 to 2008, Slovakia went into recession in 2009 and recovered in 2010 as a result of high foreign investment in the car manufacturing industry. However GDP growth has been slow since then (1.5% in 2013) as the impact of these investments faded along with weak consumer demand due to consistently high unemployment rates (13% in 2014) particularly among young people.

Slovakia’s key industries are car manufacturing and computer parts. Its main trading partners are Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.
