Lebanon

The Lebanese Republic is located in the Middle East and is bordered by Syria and Israel. Years of political instability have followed a long civil war from 1975 to 1990.

A small, laissez-faire economy, Lebanon experienced substantial growth during the world-wide recession 2008-2011, but it has stagnated since then – GDP at the end of 2013 was 1%. Instability in neighbouring Syria has had a large part to play in this with Lebanon hosting over one million refugees representing over a fifth of its population. Enormous, and growing, demand for public services may further worsen an already substantial fiscal deficit.

Its keys exports are gold, diamonds and jewellery and some of its key trading partners are Switzerland, South Africa, USA and Italy. Lebanon’s tourism industry has however been hit badly by the Syrian crisis.
