Germany is the largest economy in Europe and fourth largest in the world. Main industries are automobiles, iron, steel, coal, cement, chemicals, machinery, vehicles, machine tools, electronics, food and beverages, shipbuilding and textiles. 

The industrial sector is very strong in Germany, employing over 5 million workers. It currently stands at 2.6% of GDP and is one of the highest in the world putting the country at third place for patents registered globally. This strategy has boosted many emerging industry sector such as biotechnology, environmental sciences, nanotechnology, aerospace and ICT.

The strength of the German economy depends on its exports and 69% of the countries exports go to other European countries with 57% being exported to Eurozone counties. Germany's export performance therefore heavily depends on the strength of the euro. The weakening of the dollar along with increased energy prices and emerging market slowdown will challenge the German export market. The strength of the Germany economy is very dependent on the overall strength of the eurozone and if the eurozone breaks up or one of the member states dafaults it will cost the country hugely.

Other factors challenging the German economy are low productivity growth, inflexible labour market, an aging infrastructure and an aging population. Issues also need to be addressed with the communications infrastructure, the education system and the ease of starting a new enterprise.

The German economy grew by  0.4% in the last quarter of 2013 and by 1.3% overall in 2013,  driven by exports and investments. Employment and investment is continuing to rise and this should drive more consumption in Germany in 2014. As a result, growth is expected to reach 1.7% this year.
