Abstract

Overall performance for Dairy categories in the Germany market are in a state of contraction, with only soymilk, cheese and dairy-based desserts demonstrating any potential of sustained growth. Key factors affecting the market in Germany include:
o Large scale mergers minimized the number of market players and volume decreases are shifting the focus further towards external markets
o Health claims regulations, implemented by the EU, have largely affected the drinking yogurt and spoonable yogurt categories, with key players revising and streamlining strategic alignment of their products
o With the shift in consumption patterns to adapt to a busier lifestyle, consumers are now more focused on on-the-go consumption, putting dairy drinks at risk of becoming marginalized in favor of a single product that provides a complete breakfast solution

Germany

Germany is the largest economy in Europe and fourth largest in the world. Main industries are automobiles, iron, steel, coal, cement, chemicals, machinery, vehicles, machine tools, electronics, food and beverages, shipbuilding and textiles.

The industrial sector is very strong in Germany, employing over 5 million workers. The small and medium sized enterprise is also very strong, employing more than 25 million people and particularly young apprentices, helping to boost a demographic that has been plagued with unemployment throughout Europe since the credit crunch began.

Germany also has a strong services sector (banking, financial services, public sector, hospitality and transport) providing work to almost 29 million workers.

One important factor driving the german economy is the amount of investment in research and development. It currently stands at 2.6% of GDP and is one of the highest in the world putting the country at third place for patents registered globally. This strategy has boosted many emerging industry sector such as biotechnology, environmental sciences, nanotechnology, aerospace and ICT.

The strength of the German economy depends on its exports and 69% of the countries exports go to other European countries with 57% being exported to Eurozone counties. Germany's export performance therefore heavily depends on the strength of the euro. The weakening of the dollar along with increased energy prices and emerging market slowdown will challenge the German export market. The strength of the Germany economy is very dependent on the overall strength of the eurozone and if the eurozone breaks up or one of the member states dafaults it will cost the country hugely.

Other factors challenging the German economy are low productivity growth, inflexible labour market, an aging infrastructure and an aging population. Issues also need to be addressed with the communications infrastructure, the education system and the ease of starting a new enterprise.

The German economy grew by  0.4% in the last quarter of 2013 and by 1.3% overall in 2013,  driven by exports and investments. Employment and investment is continuing to rise and this should drive more consumption in Germany in 2014. As a result, growth is expected to reach 1.7% this year.

Food

The global food and beverages market is worth almost US$7trillion with retail food products accounting for almost US$4trillion. The food industry includes products such as dairy foods, meat and poultry, cereals, fruit and vegetables, seafood etc. Key trends in the industry include health, sustainability and convenience as the world's population increases, incomes rise and increased urbanisation. The UN has identified that the world will need 70% more food to sustain a global population of 9.6 billion by 2050.

One of the fast growing segments of the market is the demand for functional foods, foods which offer greater health benefits.

The main producers of food are in Europe and the US. Both production and consumption of food is increasing in developing countries with these countries accounting for an increasing production of food commodities.

Challenges facing the sector include water shortages, food security as the global population grows, the environmental impact of increased food production, increased competition amongst suppliers of prepared food manufacturers and legislative issues  as laid down by CAP (Common Agriculture Policy) in Europe and WTO (World Trade Organisation).

One of our publishers, Plimsoll, have analysed the Food Manufacture market and have delivered a comprehensive individual analysis on the top 500 companies, including AGRO TECH FOODS LIMITED, AMERICAN LORAIN CORP and ARGUS SA.

Research and Experts provide the latest trends and statistics on the global food industry.

Food, Drink and Tobacco

The Food, Drink and Tobacco industry is kept current and ready to adapt to market trends with our range of industry intelligence reports.

Changes in food and drink consumption have been mostly driven by increased urbanisation and growing middle classes globally. The demand for higher quality food stuffs is rising with increased demand for high protein foods such as meat and dairy.

The soft drinks sector has also benefitted from the globalisation of higher value foods. This has been a rapidly growing sector with increased sales in Asia and Eastern Europe. For further information see our Plimsoll reports on this subject.

The Tobacco industry has been suffering since the 1990's as a result of government intervention in many countries to control the levels of addiction amongst citizens.
