Romania is located in Central/South-Eastern Europe. Having overthrown its communist regime in 1989, Romania went through a period of instability, before economic recovery from 2000 on.  Romania joined the EU in 2007 and is not yet a member of the Schengen area or the Eurozone.

Prudent management of the Romania’s recovery from the global economic crisis in 2008 (recession in 2009 and 2010) has resulted in a 5.1.% GDP growth rate by the end of 2013. It is currently undergoing a regime of privatisation of state-owned enterprises.

Romania’s main trading partners are Germany, Italy and France.  It has considerable natural resources such as oil, natural gas and coal.  Its main industries are metal-working, petrochemicals, engineering and car manufacturing. Romania has a low unemployment rate of 7%.
